Nicole Webb, one of PTK’s very own member, received a 2 year scholarship of $11,000 for earning and sustaining a GPA of over 3.5 from Seattle University.
Out of 500 applicants, 119 received Pride Foundation scholarships for their work in the GLBTQ community. She received two scholarships, and both will go toward a BASW.
Well done Nicole!
On another note, we had our induction ceremony last Friday, May 29th, and it was defintely a tear-jerking experience for all us three current retiring officers. With Vivian going to Seattle University, Ly to New York University, and myself to University of Washington, graduation will be a bittersweet experience for us, which i’m sure is the same for everyone else.
We are all excited for our next phase in our academic life, yet sad to leave our wonderful advisor, Melissa Grinley, for providing us an amazing and enriching experience in the chapter. I feel like being an officer in Phi Theta Kappa have given me some of the best memories i could ever have, especially since all four of us have gotten closer over the course of months.
They now share one of my secrets that they would never have known without sharing a hotel bedroom with (hehe).
I wanted to take this opportunity to congratulate the new members, and also our new officers who will be presiding the chapter from summer’09 onwards. We are excited for new leadership, and believe that they will grow with the chapter, like we have!
President- Aaron Newton
Vice President of Service- Nadine Al Alawi
Vice President of Scholarship- Linda Shaffer
Vice President of Fellowship- Judy Ye
Technology Officer- D. Julian
Thank you Melissa! You have been a motherly figure and a great friend to us!

Annual Spring Siege on Weeds
Date: Friday, June 5th from 9 am to 2 pm
Meet: Flag Plaza, west side of campus facing College Way North
Time: 8:45 am Project Orientation: Pick up Tools, Safety Vests,
Coffee, Water and Snacks Provided by the Education Fund
Lunch for Volunteers in the Student Club Room available from 11:30 to 1:00
This is the all campus Volunteer opportunity to work with the Seattle City Dept. of Transportation street crew, clearing weeds from the median in front of campus on College Way North or to work with our grounds crew around the Child Care Building.
If you want to work with the large group, but cannot start until later, just come on by the flag plaza when you are free. The supplies will remain on the plaza all morning. Alternatively, you may wish to “adopt a bed” to weed, a spot you pass daily.
We do Spring cleaning on campus to spiff up the place for the arrival of friends and families of our graduating students. It also is great to “clean house” at the end of the school year. As always, Dr. Ron Lafayette encourages all to participate, “even if you can’t get out to weed” by taking time to “weed” your office, or some other area you work in to simplify, recycle and improve the environment in your corner of the campus.
To sign up for the clean-up, email me @ aeo.ptk.programs@gmail.com, or Michael Brokaw @ mbrokaw@sccd.ctc.edu.

If you are interested in contributing to society on a community level, consider applying for one of the officer positions now. The deadline has been extended to next Friday, May 15.
Ly Pham, our Vice President of Programs, has been accepted to New York University partially because of the work she has done as a Phi Theta Kappa officer. You will definitely learn and gain a lot through the various experiences, as well as acquire necessary organization skills that are useful in the real world.
Do not hesitate to approach us through email for more questions!
